Handshake is a decentralized naming protocol aiming to provide an alternative to current Certificate Authorities and naming systems, which are centralized and potentially susceptible to hacking, censorship, and corruption. The protocol allows peers to validate and manage the root DNS naming zone, with the internet potentially becoming more secure, resilient, and socially beneficial as a result. Handshake is part of an experiment to explore ways to rebuild a more decentralized internet. The centralization of internet services, which began in the 1990s, has moved away from the internet's original decentralized vision. Handshake believes that by making it more costly to cause disruption on the internet via decentralized systems, there would be less need for centralized corporations to manage these disruptions.
