Cosmos has a mission of creating an Internet of Blockchains through improving its interoperability. It has an Inter-Blockchain Communication (IBC) Protocol which launched in February of 2021.

It aims to create a network of crypto networks that are united by open-source tools when it comes to streamlining transactions between them. It has a focus on customizability as well as interoperability. In fact, instead of focusing its attention on its own network, the goal here is to foster an ecosystem of the network that can share data as well as tokens programmatically, without a central party that facilitates the activity.

This means that each new blockchain that is created through the use of Cosmos, dubbed a zone, is then tethered to the Cosmos Hub, and it is at this hub that the record, as well as the state of each zone, is maintained.

It uses a proof-of-stake consensus mechanism, and it is powered by the ATOM cryptocurrency.

The ATOM Token Explained

The native tokens of the Cosmos network are referred to as ATOMs. While holding these tokens, the holder has the ability to stake and validate blocks, as well as vote on governance issues as well as pay for transaction fees.

The interesting part here is the fact that the initial ATOM tokens were created when the Cosmos mainnet launched, and these were distributed to the initial donors, token sale participants, the Cosmo Foundation, and the developers. That being said, all new ATOM tokens are generated as rewards to network validators.

Features of Cosmos

The Cosmos network has three layers. The first is the application layer, which processes transactions and updates the state of the network itself. The second is the networking layer, which allows communication between the transactions as well as the blockchains, and then there’s the consensus layer, which helps nodes agree on the state of the system.

However, in order for all of these layers to be tied together, Cosmos relies on different tools, one of which is Tendermint. This is an essential element, as the Tendermint BFT engine allows the developers to build blockchains without having to code them from the ground up, due to the fact that it is an algorithm used by the network of computers that run the Cosmos software with the intention of securing the network, validating the transactions and committing blocks onto the blockchain itself.

Then you have the Tendermint Core, which is a proof-of-stake (PoS) governance mechanism that keeps the distributed network running the Cosmos Hub synched.

This means that, in order for the participants to power the blockchain, and have the ability to vote on the chances, they need to stake ATOM.

However, to become a validator, a node needs to be in the top 100 of nodes that stake ATOM. Voting power is actually based on the amount of ATOM that is staked.

Founders of Cosmos (ATOM)

The co-founders of Cosmos are actually the people that founded Tendermint, which is the gateway to the Cosmos ecosystem.

These are Jae Known, Zarko Milosevic, and Ethan Buchman.

Jae Known stepped down as CEO in 2020 but maintains a part of the projects.

His replacement is Tendermint’s CEO Peng Zhong, and the whole board of directors was updated as well.
